In grateful remembrance of many years of service and association, I
dedicate this work to the memory of
JOSEPH COWEN, M.P.
whose influence in journalism, courage in politics, and commanding
eloquence in the tribunes of the people, will ever be numbered among the
inspiring traditions of Northern England.
PREFACE
____________
THE greater portion of the matter composing these
pages was printed as a series of articles in the Newcastle Weekly
Chronicle, 1901—1902. The articles themselves were written in
Madeira during a compulsory residence there in the winter of 1900—1901.
Hearty thanks are due to the proprietors of the paper for permission to
reproduce them in the present form.
