By an unfortunate misunderstanding, the letters of
Mr. Frederic Harrison in Chapter II. were in type and were passed
for press without having been submitted to the writer, and without
having obtained his consent to their publication. He
wishes it to be understood that the letters were confidential, and
often playful, replies to constant inquiries from Miss Betham-Edwards
as to his literary work—such as he never contemplated leaving the
hands of his old friend.
